WE'VE BEEN GETTING KIDS INVOLVED WITH OUR COOKING SHOWS FOR YEARS. And we're not talking the "Today, we're going to make a smiley-face peanut butter sandwich!" or "let's make some brownies!" dumbed-down fare typically served up by most kids' programming, either. We have kids flipping food, making a vinaigrette dressing, guacamole, New Zealand mussels with pasta, etc. The message here: It's not that complicated to make some great food - a kid can do it. KIDS ARE NOT DUMB! Inexperienced, maybe; but assuming they can't handle some basic cooking techniques and culinary tools is unfair, and usually wrong. Every future chef starts at the bottom, with simple duties they can handle, whatever age they may be. IF
THE PARENTS DON'T KNOW HOW TO COOK... how can they teach their
kids?!? We've seen this over and over again: In this age of single-parent
households, double incomes, etc., precious few adults know their way
around a kitchen. Or they're insecure about what they do know - and
have no history or experience to work from. More, instead of involving
a child with some simple chore (peeling garlic, washing lettuce, coring
tomatoes, peeling potatoes, etc.) , they oftentimes chase them out of
the kitchen instead. In our experience, most kids are eager to help
- especially when the reward is a tasty dish waiting at the end. When
an adult projects their culinary fears & insecurities onto a child,
it not only sends a bad message, it also instills a negative memory
about cooking, which will be difficult - if not impossible - for them
to overcome in later years. |
